Over Leven

Gisteren kwam ik bij het dagelijkse “voor het slapen gaan”-zappen op Canvas terecht waar net het programma “over leven” begon.
Onderwerp: 5 mogelijke oplossingen voor de klimaatopwarming (bedacht door enkele wetenschappers). Dit wou ik wel even bekijken.
Hieronder de 5 ideeën (2 ervan heb ik reed gepost in juni onder de titel “geo-engineering”, maar zijn hier terug even opgenomen!)

1. spiegels (Roger Angel) :
Het idee is simpel, de uitwerking ervan iets minder. Het idee bestaat erin om gigantisch veel spiegels in een baan om de aarde te brengen op anderhalf miljard km. Op de plaats waar de aantrekkingskracht tot de aarde en de zon “0” is. Deze spiegels zouden een deel van het zonlicht moeten reflecteren en van de aarde weg houden. Een groot probleem is de hoeveelheid spiegels, het gewicht van deze spiegels en hoe deze in de ruimte te krijgen. Indien de spiegels m.b.v. ruimteschepen vervoerd worden zouden er hiervoor minstens 400 gelanceerd moeten worden wat praktisch onmogelijk is. Een alternatief is om een gigantisch lanceer platform te creëren in een berg die raketten afvuurt die de spiegels bevatten. De raketten worden met behulp van spoelen op een enorme snelheid gebracht en zo met 400G de ruimte ingestuurd. Dan worden ze vanop afstand naar de correcte plaats gestuurd.

2. zwavel (Paul Crutzen):
Paul Crutzen werkte het idee uit om raketten gevuld met zwavel naar de stratosfeer te sturen. Hier zouden de zwaveldampen los gelaten worden. Dit scherm van zwavelzuur zou ook een deel van het zonlicht tegen houden. Paul Crutzen baseerde zijn idee op de vulkaanuitbarsting Pinatubo in 1991. Deze uitbarsting stootte 10 miljoen ton zwavel in de lucht wat tot een afkoeling van het aardoppervlak leidde van 0,5°. Een studie toont ook aan dat in het verleden een enorme vulkaanuitbarsting lange tijd al het zonlicht tegen hield wat tot een ijstijd leidde.

3. wolken (John Latham en Stephen Walter): Zij willen schepen vervaardigen die rondvaren op zee (op windkracht natuurlijk) en die fijne zeewaterdeeltjes de lucht in sturen om op deze manier dikkere wolken te creëren die het zonlicht beter weerkaatsen. Deze theorie is gebaseerd op het feit dat de Amerikaanse staat San Francisco vaak gehuld is in een dikke mist die zorgt voor een “natuurlijke airconditioning” doordat deze mist het zonlicht weerkaatst. Hun studie toont aan dat ze zulke wolken ook kunstmatig kunnen creëren.

4. plankton (Ian Jones):
Ian Jones gooit het over een andere boeg. Hij wil de hoeveelheid plankton verhogen op plaatsen waar dit weinig aanwezig is. Dit kan door de toevoeging van ureum (een stof aanwezig in urine) in het water. Plankton kan CO2 opnemen, houd de Koolstof bij en staat de zuurstof weer af. Een grotere hoeveelheid plankton leid dus tot een kleinere hoeveelheid CO2. Met deze uitvoering dient uiterst zorgvuldig omgesprongen te worden aangezien een teveel aan ureum tot de dood van de vissen kan leiden. Verder rijst er de vraag of het wel verstandig is om de hoeveelheid plankton (de basis van de voedselketen) te manipuleren.

5. Kunstmatige bomen (Klaus Lackner):
Klaus Lackner will grote opvangtoestellen vervaardigen die CO2 kunnen opvangen. Zijn idee is gebaseerd op de werking van de fotosynthese bij planten en bomen. Deze toestellen zouden het gas kunnen omvormen tot poeder. Dit poeder zou dan gestockeerd worden in lege olie- of gasvelden.

Deze ideeën zijn enkel theoretische modellen en of zij ook ooit daadwerkelijk in de praktijk omgezet zullen worden moeten we afwachten. Originele ideeën zijn het alvast, maar of zulke pogingen om het klimaat te manipuleren of overheersen ook daadwerkelijk op lange termijn tot het gewenste effect zullen leiden is de vraag….

Vakantie

31 Juli 2007, de vakantie is halfweg. Zelf ben ik er nog niet toe gekomen om vakantie te nemen, en ben dus ook nog niet op reis geweest. Maar zoals het spreekwoord zegt: there's no place like home!". Hoewel we deze zomer al meer slecht weer dan goed weer hebben gehad, mogen we blijkbaar niet echt klagen. Het blijkt er overal wel slecht aan toe te gaan.


Ofwel slaan de mensen op de vlucht voor de hitte en de bosbranden. (zie hier.): Spanje, Portugal, Griekenland, Canarische eilanden, Bulgarije, Cyprus,..


Ofwel slaan ze op de vlucht om de water ellende te vermijden (zie hier.):Engeland, Nepal, India,...

Er gebeuren rare dingen. Er zijn elk jaar wel bosbranden, overstromingen,.. maar deze keer is het wel opvallend. In de meeste gevallen is het ook een 'ver-van-ons bed' -verhaal, maar deze keer komt alles wel dichterbij. Ook in België was er de voorbije weken veel storm-en waterschade. Het gevolg van "de opwarming", of is het enkel toeval en worden we een beetje paranoia van alle media heisa die tegenwoordig rond het klimaat gemaakt wordt. Afwachten is de boodschap, Only time will bring the answer.
En nu maar afwachten hoe de zomer evolueert en of we al dan niet op reis zullen gaan.

Go Els Go

Niet veel tijd om nog een "post" te doen, maar belofte maakt schuld, dus hier zijn we ermee. Zal het in 2 woorden proberen te zeggen: energie en klimaat.

Nee, onlangs kwam ik op volgende blog: http://energie-klimaat.blogspot.com/. Dit is een blog door Els Keytsman (groen!) Mijn aandacht werd onmiddelijk getrokken door een artikel "Dure energie enige oplossing voor klimaatprobleem". Niet zozeer de titel trok de aandacht, maar de eerste 2 zinnen vond ik alvast mooi geformuleerd:
Spaanse vrachtwagens met Spaanse tomaten denderen over de autosnelweg op weg naar België. In omgekeerde richting rijden Belgische vrachtwagens met tomaten naar het zuiden...
Ik ga hier echter niet verder over uitwijden, maar wou deze link alvast even promoten (en nee, ik heb hier geen enkel belang bij) omdat ik vind dat hier leerrijke info op een aangename manier naar voren wordt gebracht. Go Els Go..

geo-engineering

Dankzij een artikel uit " de standaard" met de titel: "een zonnescherm voor de aarde" werd mijn aandacht weer eens gevestigd op de absurte oplossingen die de wereld aan het bedenken is aangaande de klimaat problematiek. Zonder eerst verder te denken om de oorzaken grondiger aan te pakken zoeken we liever naar oplossingen. Eerder las ik het artikel ivm het zonnescherm boven het great barrier reef. Wel, nu heeft men hetzelfde plan (plan is natuurljk een te groot woord), beter gezegd: nu doet men onderzoek naar een zonnescherm die de hele aarde beschermt. Het zogenaamde "geo-engineering".
Roger Angel (universiteit van Arizona) onderzocht de mogelijkheid om duizenden miljarden dunne schijfvormige spiegels in een baan rond de aarde te brengen. Deze zouden dan een deel van het zonlicht weerkaatsen. De schijven zouden met superkanonnen vanaf de aarde gelanceerd kunnen worden. Lijkt me eerder een mooi scenario voor een nieuwe holywood film.
Pzul Crutzen (Nederlandse nobelprijswinnaar) ziet eerder de oplossing in het verspreiden van een zwavel nevel hoog in de atmosfeer m.b.v. raketten. De zwaveldeeltjes vormen druppeltjes die het zonlicht tegenhouden en op die manier ook de opwarming tegenwerken. onderzoek toont aan dat als alles goed gaat, deze oplossing wel werkt, maar dat als het fout gaat, de aarde nog twintig keer zo snel zou opwarmen.
Beter voorkomen dan genezen dus!
Eigenlijk wou ik een ander onderwerp aansnijden , maar dit artikel vond ik even interessant om te vermelden. De post die ik oorspronkeljik dacht te doen, kun je later op de dag verwachten!

fijne stofdeeltjes

Eerst en vooral: aangezien er enkele mensen liever mijn blog in het Nederlands lezen, en ook omdat de meeste artikels en items ergens uit de Belgische pers komen: A transition from English naar Nederlands from nu af aan!!

Ondertussen is het weer een tijdje geleden dat ik een nieuwe post gedaan heb. Het zijn dan ook drukke tijden. Om op vorig item terug te komen: de info-avond van groen was wel best interessant. Nieuwe weetjes (ook die bestaan nog steeds), interessante informatie over bedrijven die energie vriendelijke oplossingen aanbieden, en natuurlijk ook het klimaatplan van groen. De film voorstelling van "An inconvenient truth" hebben we niet meer gevolgd. DVD deze week trouwens gratis en voor niets bij humo.

Soit, genoeg over de info-avond, zij die er niet wij waren hadden ongelijk!!
De reden waarom ik plots weer zin kreeg om een nieuwe post te plaatsen was een krantenartikel dat ik van morgend tegen kwam in "het laatste nieuws": Jaarnorm fijn stof nu al overschreden op elf plaatsen (zie www.hln.be)
De jaarnorm voor fijn stof is reeds op 11 plaatsen in België overschreden. Het is vandaag 11 mei, het jaar is nog niet halfweg. Per jaar mag de grenswaarde slechts 35 dagen van de 365 overschreden worden. Vandaag zijn er plaatsen waar de grenswaarde al 36 tot zelfs 43 dagen overschreden is. Het jaar is nog maar een goede 4 maand bezig, en daarvan is al een volledige maand een te hoge concentratie fijne stofdeeltjes in lucht. 1 op 4. Niet slecht. Maar wat niet weet niet deert of hoe zegt men dit ook alweer. Zolang we er onmiddelijk geen hinder van ondervinden of men het niet direct zien kan het ons niet veel schelen.
Of: "we vinden er wel een oplossing voor als het zover is".
Als we zo verder doen maken we onze planeet onleefbaar voor onszelf. Of moeten we ons in de toekomst allemaal binnen opsluiten, want buiten is het te ongezond. Of beter nog: enkel buiten komen met gasmasker. (wat in sommige landen al het geval is!!) Hoewel dit "economisch gezien" niet haalbaar is (dit is de reactie die je langs allerlei kanten krijgt), mag men van mij toch een aantal groene wetten bij creëren! En akkoord, het is niet altijd simpel om met het openbaar vervoer te reizen e.d. maar er zijn genoeg oplossingen voor hande om het fileprobleem en de bijhorende vervuiling, en zelfs de bijhorende frustraties te verminderen. Thuiswerk lijkt alvast een eerste stap in de goede richting. In Nederland bevoorbeeld staan ze hier een stap verder mee. Natuurlijk heeft alles zijn voor en nadelen. We leven echter nog teveel in een maatschappij waar mensen enkel aan zichzelf denken, en waar je met geld en macht je alles kan veroorloven. Dan denk ik weer aan een ander artikel dat ik in de loop van de week las (paris hilton die denkt dat ze meer mag dan een ander) maar het loont niet eens de moeite om daar verder over uit te wijden.
Allesinds. Het is weekend, en het regent zelfs niet momenteel. Tijd om de zakdoek voor de mond te binden en op stap te gaan!

How To Cook an Egg with Mobile Phones

Something I read a long time ago was that it is possible to boil an Egg with 2 mobile phones. The idea was very simple and the results where pretty astonishing. Just place the egg between two mobile phones which are calling to eachother. Put a radio nearby to simulate talking and there you go. Two Russian journalists "did" the experiment and the result where incredible:
15 minutes: The egg became slightly warm.
25 minutes: The egg became very warm.
40 minutes: The egg became very hot.
65 minutes: The egg was cooked.

After 65 minutes the egg was boiled... Unbelievable. Imagine what this does with human brains and cells...
BUT after taking a closer look it seems to be impossible to repeat the experiment. If you calculating the energy that is emitted by a mobile phone, and the energy needed to boil an egg there seems to be a serious gap.

A nice try to make people aware of the possible danger of the use of mobile phones. Although the experiment was not true,this does not mean that we shouldn't be carefull. A couple of weeks ago, some doctors started a petition to make mobile phone usage forbidden for people younger than 16 years old. So their might be some danger after all.
Mobile phones do not exists for such a long time that we can have scientific proof of the results of their radiation. After all, smoking wasn't harmfull neither many years ago....


The link on following webiste shows all antenna's that mobile operators have placed and planning to place in Belgium. Incredible how many there are yet, and how many they're still planning to build.

fresh air again

A new work week. No SMOG anymore and all problems are solved. NOT!!!
In any case, I would like to thank all people who did their best to reudcue the CO2 emission during the past week (including myself). Shame on all you selfish people who didn't kept their speed. But I've putted it on film! :o)



And because good initiatives deserve some attention (although it's a publicity stunt), I will publish this movie:
(maybe a good investment of the governement to reduce speed on highways, but I'm afraid the number of accidents will grow.)

JMDD

When I was driving home yesterday evening (again 90km/u) I listened to StuBru. On a certain moment, a listener calls to the radio program, and tells that she saw a lot of people driving too fast, also a car with a “P” license plate n°. (This means that it’s someone of the Belgium parliament.) Shouldn’t they need to give the good example?? (even though they also don’t drive with environment-friendly cars)
Anyway,the host of the program calls to the parliament with the story that he ran into an empty car with the license plate N° “P71”, and that he would like to know to who this car belongs. The guy at the telephone looks in his file and answers the question: Jean Marie De Decker.
After this phone call, the host calls this politician for a reaction. At first he denied this, but afterwards he confessed. They way he reacts was really funny. He was not very happy with the phone call, and he even didn’t agreed with the speed limit, and told that other people should not tell him what to do. He didn’t agreed that police gives speed limits, and said that they only use the Kyoto-regulation as a way to earn money for the state. Not a good publicity, but everybody who knows him will not be surprised of his reaction.

SMOG on the blog

From this morning on, there is a special speed limitation on some Belgian Highway's. the maximum allowed speed is now 90 km/u. The reason to lower the speed limit is because there is too much SMOG in the air. The speed limitaion will probably be valid till friday.
On the radio I heard that there were around 20, 30 people on the roads to place special sign's to indicate where this limitation is valid.
This morning I drove to work and I didn't noticed anything!! Maybe 90 % of drivers drove as fast as usual. So the question is if the work of these "sign putters" was usefull, or just a waste of time and money.
SMOG is very unhealty for the breathing mechanism, and can even cause COPD. Advice is to stay inside and do no heavy physical efforts.
If these polution is so unhealty, why are there so less people who don't obey the rules? Is it that important to arrive 10 minutes earlier on work? Even more important then health?!? (source)
For me, the police may sharpen speed controls. But unfortunattely they don't. Although, they do not contole speed more than useual, they already gave more than thousand people a speeding ticket. (and this on only half a day) On certain times, police even noticed more than 7 speeding violations in one minute. (source)

Understand who can?! But here again, everybody is playing turtle and hiding inside their shield, thinking that other people will take care.

These subject of air polution reminds me of the "global dimming"- subject, Interesting information about this can be found here and here.

And this item reminds me on it's turn on an interesting part of a belgian television show (and funny as well) I saw yesterday. This part of the televsion show can be watched here. The guy in the movie adresses some possible dangers for the world like sun storms, meteorite strike,... Learnfull information on a funny way.

Enough for today, I'm afraid I'll need to hit the road again. Although speed is limited till 90, I'll probably won't be able to drive more than 40 due to the daily traffic jam. I'm still wondering why there are so much crazy people to join traffic jams for 3 hours a day they're whole life long.

I'm working temporary "on location" now for a couple of month's and I'm already completely insane!!! Insane in the brain. :o)

global warming not bad at all

Because It's friday, and I don't have the time to write something usefull. Just a funny image I received via email. Probably most of the people 've got it, but doesn't matter.

A couple of days ago, I read some interesting article about "global dimming" (practicly the opposite as "global warming"), but I didn't had the time yet to read this in depth. So more information will be provided afterwards. The only thing I was thinking that it's pretty remarkable that "global dimming" is not mentioned that often in the media. Is it not important? Is the influence small enough to neglect? Are the consequences neglectable? Or is it just me that lives on another world. Although, I never heard about it before reading this article. Searching in Google deliveres 592.000 results, so probably it's just me. :o)

For a concrete definition see "global dimming" on wikipedia. Maybe global warming and global dimming results in a zero-operation, and there is nothing to worry about at all. But I'm affraid that it's not that simple at all. A new item to take a closer look at...

Crazy Inventions award

After reading the previous article, I started searching to find more information about the results on global warming to the great barrier reef. A very interesting article can be found here (in dutch). This article describes some "solutions" (what's in a name), to let the reef survive.
The first solution is to build a large shield over the reef to avoid direct sunlight on the water, and place the reef into the shadow. Not very esthetic I think. See here (English)
A second solution they propose is to spray the surface of the water with water pumped up from the sea, this to break up the surface of the water to reduce the amount of UV-radiation. See here (English)

Pretty funny article! What a crazy solutions. How far will they need to go on long terms? Maybe we should build a complete shield around the earth, create our own sunshine and produce our own oxygen. Build a world wide airconditioning? The crazier, the better!

The most remarkable thing I read in the article was the following sentence:
"We're very concerned because this is a $5.8 billion tourist industry on the reef, employing 33,000 people,"
So here again we see that the reason to save the reef is not to protect the environment, but to earn as much money as possible. Economic interests are placed above nature. Of course I agree that employment and economy is important as well to survive, but we don't breath money yet.
Although people are more and more discussing global warming, I think most people think that they don't have to change, that other people will do this. Or that this is the task of the governement. Although the discussion is opened, the thinking pattterns of most people are not changed yet. Untill this does not happen, nothing will change.
It becomes time that people realize that there is more in life than money!!!

Global warming already known for years

My Interest in the Climate problems started a couple of years ago, when I read this article in the newspaper. Nothing new if you read this now. But this article was published almost 3 years ago (before most people were talking about global warming and people have never heard of a person called "Al Gore"). At that moment I've cutted this out because I found it pretty remarkable. I've always been fascinated about inventions that people do to make this a better world, but in the end, it turns out that it makes the world even worse. Global warming is for my opinion one of the negative results of all super-inventions of human kind.
(Maybe it's also because of my great predilection for australie that this specific article drew my attention, but this doesn't matter.)
When the article was published, nobody payed attention to this topic, now it's a topic were everybody talks about. Media had a very important influence on this. Although the movie "An Inconvenient Truth" had a lot of criticism, it opened the eyes of people, and global warming became a topic of worldwide discussion. Not a bad thing at all.
At the moment I'm wondering how the story will continue. Some people are laughing this away, other people are predicting large disasters.
Although I don't know what exactly to expect, I'm convinced that health problems and natural catastrophes will grow in amount.

Welcome myself to the Blogging world

Since I'm working in the IT webdevelopment world, I couldn't stay behind in new technologies. Although blogging was invented almost 10 years ago, and I told myself not to start with this, I'm finally involved with it. I didn't decide yet what I will blog about and with what frequency, but at least creating a blog is a good start. The intention is to update my blog at least on a weekly basis and to add some remarkable things I experienced during the week. Now let's see if I can keep my promise.....
